Where to Stay in Sigiriya

Sleep near the rock and you can be first through the gate. Here is where to stay, and why.

The single best thing you can do for your visit to Sigiriya is to spend the night before it close by. You climb in the cool at opening time, come back for breakfast and a swim, and still have the afternoon for elephants.

There are three bases, all within half an hour of one another. Sigiriya village and its surroundings put you minutes from the rock and Pidurangala, with everything from family guesthouses to celebrated nature hotels. Habarana, 15 km north, is the safari hub and has the railway station. Dambulla and Kandalama, to the south-west, are convenient for the Cave Temple, buses and the road to Kandy.

Guest scores are Trip.com’s (out of 5) and rates are indicative starting prices per room per night in US dollars. They change constantly — every card links to Trip.com for live prices and availability.

  • Two or three nights? Still Sigiriya for most people; the parks, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa are easy half-day and day trips.
  • A special occasion? Jetwing Vil Uyana or Water Garden Sigiriya for the setting; Heritance Kandalama for the architecture.
  • Mainly here for elephants? Habarana saves a little driving before and after each safari.
  • Travelling by bus? A guesthouse in Sigiriya village close to the main road, or Dambulla.

Booking tips

  • From December to April and in August the best-located hotels sell out — book several weeks ahead.
  • "Sigiriya" covers a wide area. Check the distance to the rock’s entrance on the map before you book; some "Sigiriya" hotels are 10 km or more away.
  • Remember that you should not walk the roads after dark because of elephants. If your hotel is outside the village, plan on tuk-tuks or dinner in.
  • Ask your hotel to arrange the early tuk-tuk for the rock or Pidurangala, and the safari jeep.
  • Air conditioning is worth having most of the year, and a pool earns its keep in the hot midday hours.

Once the bed is booked, choose the experiences: our ranked tour comparison covers the guided climbs, safaris and hikes worth adding.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How many nights should I stay in Sigiriya?

Two is ideal — enough for the rock, Pidurangala and a safari without rushing. One night still lets you climb at opening time, which a day trip does not.

Which hotels have a view of Sigiriya rock?

Hotel Sigiriya, Water Garden Sigiriya and Aliya Resort and Spa are known for views of the rock from their pools or rooms. Views depend on the room category, so check before you book.

Is it better to stay in Sigiriya or Dambulla?

Sigiriya, if the rock is your main reason for coming: it is quieter and you can start the climb minutes after waking. Dambulla is better for bus travellers and for the Cave Temple.

Can I walk from my hotel to the rock?

From guesthouses in the village and the hotels nearest the entrance, yes, in daylight. Do not walk in the dark — wild elephants use the roads around the site.

How much do hotels in Sigiriya cost?

Simple guesthouses start at around US$20–45 a night, comfortable mid-range hotels with a pool are roughly US$80–130, and the top nature resorts cost several hundred dollars in high season.
