A morning on the rock and an afternoon among elephants is the classic Sigiriya day. Three protected areas lie close together north-east of the village — Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park and Hurulu Eco Park — and one large population of wild Asian elephants moves between them as water and grass change through the year.
In the dry season the Minneriya reservoir, built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE, shrinks and exposes fresh grass on its bed. Elephants converge on it in their hundreds, an event known as "The Gathering" that usually peaks around August and September. At other times the herds are more often in Kaudulla or Hurulu, and good drivers simply go where the elephants are.
Top things to do at Minneriya, Kaudulla & Hurulu
Take an afternoon jeep safari
Safaris run in open-top 4×4s and last about three to four hours including the drive. Afternoon departures (roughly 2–3 pm) are best: elephants come out of the forest onto the open ground as the heat eases, and the light is beautiful.
Watch a herd, not just count elephants
Ask your driver to stop, switch off the engine and stay with one family group. Calves playing, adults dusting and the herd closing around its young are worth more than a tally.
Look beyond the elephants
The tanks draw painted storks, pelicans, cormorants and eagles; spotted deer, water buffalo, crocodiles and toque macaques are common. Leopards and sloth bears exist but are very rarely seen here.

How to get to Minneriya, Kaudulla & Hurulu
- From Sigiriya: the Minneriya park entrance is about 25 km away via Habarana, roughly 40 minutes; Kaudulla and Hurulu are a little further or nearer depending on the gate. Virtually all safaris include pickup from Sigiriya hotels.
- Booking: reserve a jeep safari in advance in the gathering months, or through your guesthouse. Check whether the park entrance fee is included — often it is paid separately at the gate.
- Combining: Polonnaruwa lies on the same road, so ruins in the morning and a safari in the afternoon fit neatly into one day.
Insider tips
- Let the driver choose the park on the day. Insisting on Minneriya when the herds are in Kaudulla is the commonest mistake.
- At peak season there can be many jeeps around one herd. A good driver keeps a respectful distance and does not block the animals’ path — say so if yours does not.
- Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and something to cover your camera: the tracks are dusty in the dry season and muddy in the wet.
- Never get out of the jeep, and never feed wildlife.
